MANDATORY AES FILING. ARE YOU READY?

AES filing for self-propelled vehicle exports is now mandatory.
Documentation must be filed 72 hours in advance. Get up to speed
on your responsibilities.

U.S. Customs has announced that filing of electronic export information through the Automated Export System (AES) is now mandatory for all exports of used self-propelled vehicles.

  • All used self-propelled vehicles must be filed via AES regardless of value or country of destination
  • All used self-propelled vehicles must be filed via AES 72 hours prior to export.

How do the new regulations affect importers and exporters?

Previously, vehicles destined for Canada were exempt from AES reporting. This exemption will no longer apply, and any vehicle destined for Canada must have the accompanying electronic information submitted to Customs 72 hours before the vehicle’s arrival at the border.

More information on U.S. Customs export requirements for used self-propelled vehicles can be found on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.

What are used self-propelled vehicles?

As defined in the U.S. Customs regulations “Self-propelled vehicle” includes any automobile, truck, tractor, bus, motorcycle, motor home, self-propelled agricultural machinery, self-propelled construction equipment, self-propelled special use equipment, and any other self-propelled vehicle used or designed for running on land but not on rail. “Used” refers to any self-propelled vehicle the equitable or legal title to which has been transferred by a manufacturer, distributor, or dealer to an ultimate purchaser.

What if I don’t comply with the regulations?

Missing or late electronic export information will lead to vehicles being held at the border and the possible assessment of penalties. In order to keep your vehicles moving, you need to prepare for filing the proper documentation in the required timeframe.
