The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a free trade agreement in force between Canada and 10 other countries in the Indo-Pacific region as well as the United Kingdom.
The CPTPP is designed to expand over time to include new member economies. With the agreement now in force, any economy that is able to meet the high-standard rules and ambitious market access commitments of the CPTPP can seek to join. Costa Rica submitted a formal request to accede to the CPTPP on August 10, 2022.
The Government of Canada is now soliciting the views of Canadians on the potential accession of Costa Rica to the CPTPP. All interested parties are invited to submit their views by March 16, 2025.
