Energy Efficiency Regulations Amendment 17 Consultation and Webinars on Household Appliances

Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) is hosting webinars and public consultations on the upcoming Amendment 17 Energy Efficiency Regulations.

The Energy Efficiency Regulations Forward Regulatory Plan has been updated in April indicating Natural Resources Canada’s intent to proceed with the development of Amendment 17 to increase the energy efficiency for all new home appliances to the ENERGY STAR® level, to deliver on the Mandate Letter of December 13, 2019, in which the Prime Minister of Canada asked the Minister of Natural Resources to make ENERGY STAR® certification mandatory for all new home appliances starting in 2022. Amendment 17 would also update other regulated products as described below:

  • Introduce Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), testing standards, verification and reporting requirements for one household appliance;
  • Introduce more stringent MEPS and update testing standards for central air conditioners and heat pumps;
  • Make miscellaneous updates for some currently regulated products; and
  • Introduce the authority to use Ministerial Regulations for some products.

This bulletin is to provide industry stakeholders with technical detail required to comment on the requirements under consideration for these products.

Additional information on Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations including a current list of Standards Council of Canada accredited certification bodies can be found in the Department’s website.

Technical bulletins with upcoming webinars have been released to initiate a public consultation process. Consultation ends on May 31, 2021.
