Canada sanctions against Russia, certain regions of Ukraine and cancellation of export permits

Government of Canada announced new additional sanctions under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations and the Special Economic Measures (Ukraine) Regulations. Many western and European countries have also placed sanctions against Russia for the current situation in Ukraine.

The announced sanctions will target members of the Russian elite and their family members, as well as paramilitary organization the Wagner Group, and major Russian banks, among others. Canada will also sanction members of the Russian Security Council, including the defence minister, the finance minister, and the justice minister.

Schedule 4 of the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations provides listing of goods prohibited for export, sell, supply or ship to Russia. Also, there are import and export prohibited activities for Crimea region of Ukraine, LNR and DNR region of Ukraine, view the Regulations Amending the Special Economic Measures (Ukraine) Regulations

In addition to no longer issuing new export permits for Russia, the government will also cancel existing permits. Only permits and applications related to specific end-uses such as medical supply and humanitarian needs may be considered for exception, on a case-by-case basis.
