U.S.-Canada tariffs delayed one month

U.S. tariffs scheduled to take effect at 12:01 AM on February 4, 2025, against Canada-origin and Mexico-origin goods entering the United States have been delayed by one month. However, the imposition of a 10% tariff against China-origin goods will remain in place.

As a result of the U.S. delaying tariffs by one month, the government of Canada will also be delaying its planned tariffs against the U.S. Therefore, no additional customs duties will be required for Canada-origin and Mexico-origin goods entering the U.S. on February 4, 2025, nor U.S.-origin goods moving into Canada. Trade activity will proceed under the standard tariff and trade regime.

These delays have come about as a result of separate diplomatic efforts by the governments of Canada and Mexico to provide additional security at U.S. border crossings. The interim period will see separate discussions take place between the U.S. and Canada, and the U.S. and Mexico to find long-term solutions designed to avoid entirely the imposition of tariffs.
