On February 21, 2024, CBSA launched phase one of the requirement to include the country of melt and pour (COM) in the Single Window Integrated Import (SWI) Declaration for steel products covered by General Import Permits (GIP) 80 and 81. During this phase, providing the COM was optional.
In phase two, new regulatory updates to GIP No. 80 – Carbon Steel and GIP No. 81 – Specialty Steel are scheduled to take effect on November 5, 2024. Importers will then be mandated to supply COM information when completing their customs declarations through the Single Window Integrated Import Declaration (SW IID) for relevant steel imports as a condition of using the GIPs.
