U.S. East and Gulf ports strike has come to an end (temporarily)

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) workers union and United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have reached a tentative agreement that brings the massive three-day strike that shutdown ports up and down the U.S. eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast to an end.

Union leadership and representatives from the ports have worked out the framework for a new six-year deal. The union has agreed to suspend the strike until January 15, 2025, while the two sides negotiate some outstanding issues.

With this tentative deal in place, strike action has ended and workers have resumed their regular duties.

The three-day work stoppage resulted in significant backlog at the impacted ports. Clearing the cargo backlog, while also contending with new ship arrivals, is expected to take weeks.
