New Certificate of Analysis requirement for certain fertilizers

The Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently published a new interim standard for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in biosolids imported or sold in Canada as fertilizers.

The new standard will be enforced on October 18, 2024, at which time importers will be required to provide a Certificate of Analysis at the time of import to demonstrate that their products are compliant.

This standard was developed following stakeholder and public consultations in 2023-24 and is designed to mitigate the potential risks to human and animal health and the environment associated with land application of heavily contaminated biosolids sold as commercial fertilizer.

Refer to the Notice to Industry – Implementation of an interim standard for per – and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in commercial biosolids for further information.
