U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a reminder that beginning on June 29th, 2022, imports of aluminum products requiring an Aluminum Import Monitoring System (AIMs) license will require the name of the countries of largest smelt and second largest smelt, and will no longer accept ‘unknown’.
The country of smelt for primary aluminum is defined as the country where the largest (and second largest) volume of new aluminum metal is produced from alumina (refined aluminum oxide) by the electrolytic Hall-Héroult process.
A one year grace period had been established to allow the use of ‘unknown’ to allow importers and license applicants sufficient time to gather this information.
