Government of Canada Announces Higher Tariffs for Russia and Belarus

On Thursday March 3rd, 2022,Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced the removal of Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) status for Russia and Belarus. This means higher tariffs of 35% will now apply to all goods coming into Canada.

As a result, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has issued Customs Notice 22-02 Customs Notice 22-02: Order withdrawing the Most-Favoured-Nation status from Russia and Belarus

Effective March 2nd, 2022, preferential tariff MFN no longer applies to all goods originating in Russia or Belarus. The General Tariff of 35% will apply to all importations into Canada for these two countries.

The Order in Council P.C. 2022-0182, SOR / 2022-0035 is established to withdraw the entitlement to the MFN Tariff for goods that originate in Russia or Belarus. Available on the Privy Council Office website.
