U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the 2017 Calendar Year Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) limit for tuna and skipjack, in airtight containers, not in oil, eligible to be entered in Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) subheading 1604.14.22.
The 2017 TRQ limit was determined to be 14,609,465 kilograms. The amount is calculated each year based on a percentage of the previous year’s total imports.
Tuna entered at the low rate has a 6.0 percent duty rate, as opposed to tuna entered at the over quota rate, which has a 12.5 percent duty rate.
CBP had expected the limit to be issued in March 2017. They may now issue proration and liquidation instructions based on this limit.
TRQs allow countries to export specified quantities of a product to the United States at a relatively low tariff, but subject all imports of the product above a pre-determined threshold to a higher tariff.
